Tile and Vinyl That Looks Like Wood

One of the newest trends in flooring is the installation of a surface that looks like a hardwood or laminate floor, but actually isn’t wood at all. These floors can be either a new type of vinyl or resilient flooring material, or even a manufactured tile that resembles the look of wood.

Vinyl that looks like wood is a very durable and low maintenance option, plus it’s usually less costly.

Also known as LVT or luxury vinyl tile, this product offers the look of hardwood, tile or stone in a variety of colors and textures. It feels soft underfoot and is warmer to the touch so it’s a very comfortable floor for a home.

In our dry New Mexico climate, vinyl plank flooring is an excellent choice. It withstands moisture well, so makes for good flooring for kitchens and bathrooms. If you have kids or pets, vinyl flooring is one of the best choices! It is scratch resistant, so holds up well to pets’ nails and kids’ toys, and doesn’t have nearly as much of the “hollow” sound that laminates can have. When vinyl flooring is glued down, it’s even quieter to walk on.

The other flooring that looks like wood but isn’t… is tile. Today, a number of choices exist in ceramic tile that looks like hardwood flooring. Tile is suitable for every room in the house and is very easy to maintain. The cost is usually more than a resilient vinyl tile floor.

Wood-look tiles can be found in a variety of sizes including planks. If a tile is ever damaged, it can be replaced. Tile floors feel colder to the touch, so take that into consideration in your choice of flooring for our New Mexico climate. Tile is the least sound absorbent flooring, although an underlayment can be added that will reduce sound levels.

In wood-look tile flooring, grout is usually minimal and is chosen to match the color of the tile. At The Floor Store, we have many choices in wood-look flooring, as well as hardwoods and laminates.
