More About Carpet and Padding

  • Fiber is the term for the carpet material itself. Single fibers are spun together, producing yarns which are then attached to a woven backing. Pile refers to the height of the fiber. A higher pile will feel more comfortable and plush when you walk on it.
  • Twist:
  • Density is a measure of how closely packed together the strands of fibers are to each other. The higher the density, the stronger the carpet will be.
  • Carpet weight is measured in ounces per square yard. Face weight refers to the amount of fiber on the surface of the carpet, while total weight includes the backing and latex as well. High face weight carpets are higher quality and will be more durable. Note: when you compare weights in carpeting, always compare similar fiber materials, such as polyester to polyester, not wool to polyester.
  • Padding: The padding under the carpet is vital. It provides extra cushioning but also insulates from cold, especially on the slab floors often found in New Mexico homes, and from noise. Manufacturer guidelines recommend which padding to pair with that carpet; some carpets will not wear well if they are paired with the wrong padding. And when you visit The Floor Store at The Carpet Company, we’ll help you choose the right pad to place under the carpet sample. Even when you’re “foot testing” in our showroom, the right pad will help you determine how that carpet would feel in your home.
