Vacuums seem like a simple enough tool for cleaning your floors, but it is important that you choose the right vacuum for the type of flooring your home has.

Does your home have vinyl planks or hardwood floors? If so, you’ll want to buy a vacuum that is specifically designed for those surfaces. Otherwise, you risk damaging the flooring and needing repairs or even replacement. If you are using a regular vacuum that is not specific to your flooring, be sure to remove the beater bar on the bottom of the vacuum. The beater bar can cause scratches and scrapes on the vinyl planks.

If you have decided to purchase a vacuum specific to your flooring, be sure to do your research before making a purchase. There are many different options online to choose from, like smart vacuums, handheld, or upright wireless/corded vacuums.

Smart vacuums are usually built for both hard surfaces and carpet, and they use rotating brushes to clean the floors in a circular motion with small bristles. Some of these smart vacuums can be very expensive, but they also save you the time of vacuuming yourself. You can usually program smart vacuums for specific times of the day and set them to clean certain rooms a day.

Handheld/Upright Vacuums tend to have more suction power than smart vacuums, and some come with attachments for specific tasks like cleaning stairs or upholstery, as well as long cords that allow for cleaning in larger areas. Most upright vacuums are now offered as a “duo” and can work on both carpet and hardwood/vinyl floors.

Always be sure to check the manufacturer’s recommendations on the type of flooring you can clean with their equipment.
