Choosing new flooring for your home can be exciting and stressful all at the same time but knowing the options you have before choosing a hardwood floor and finish can ease some stress.

With hardwood being popular in New Mexico, a common question among customers choosing hardwood is what type of polyurethane finish to choose from. Polyurethane is typically recommended over varnish for hardwood floors.

There are four types of polyurethane finishes matte, satin, semi-gloss, and high gloss.

Matte- Matte polyurethane finishes will have the flattest appearance regarding ‘shine’. The flat appearance is the best to hide scuffs and scrapes. If you are placing flooring in a high-traffic area or have pets, this finish may be best for your home.

Satin- Satin polyurethane finishes are among the most popular choices for finishes. The satin finish will have a low to medium sheen and is extremely versatile.

Semi-gloss- Semi-gloss polyurethane finish is best placed in areas where there is not high traffic in the home because of the required maintenance and higher sheen.

High-gloss- High-gloss polyurethane finish is the least popular choice for home flooring and is rarely used because it tends to show all blemishes in flooring.
